Wichita, Kansas


Wichita is the largest city in Kansas and the 51st largest city in the United States. Incorporated as a city in 1870, it was named after the local Wichita Indians. It would soon become an important destination for cattle drivers along the Chilsolm Trail, a trail in which cattle ranchers used to drive cattle from Texas to Kansas. In 1886, Fairmount College became Wichita State University, which remains the second largest university in the state of Kansas. After oil was found near Wichita, the city becme a major production point for aircraft. The first viable airplane, the Cessna Comet, was produced in Wichita in 1917, as were the first airplanes made specifically for production. Wichita was a major center for airplane production during World War II and earned the nickname "Air Capital." In 1958, the popular chain Pizza Hut was founded in Wichita.

Today, Wichita remains an important center for airplane production.
