Another activity that can be used as a warm-up to playing the “Hotel Decimalfornia” game is to select one of the decimal drills that can be found at the following link. – https://mrnussbaum.com/decimals_drills/
More specifically, the drill https://mrnussbaum.com/grade5standards/538-2 reinforces adding decimals to the tenth.
Students should watch the instructional video for Hotel Decimalfornia at https://mrnussbaum.com/hotel/ before playing. Students can play the game either as a whole group or on individual computers. If you play as a whole group, ask each student to write down their answer. Then, pull a name randomly to call on a student. This way they are all held accountable throughout the game because they will never know whose turn it is next.
Print out the attached Hotel Decimalfornia printable and distribute to students. In this assessment, students have to add and subtract decimals to the tenth to figure out the correct hotel room to place celebrities and historical figures.
