Battle Dates: May 5-7, 1864
Who won: Inconclusive Casualties: Union: 18400 ; Confederacy: 11400
Brief Description: The Wilderness battle was the first in a series of bloody assaults led by General Ulysses S. Grant and the Army of the Potomac on General Robert E.Lee's Army of Northern Virginia in what is referred to as the Overland Campaign. The battle occurred in the impenetrable scrub growth and rough terrain that encompassed more than 70 square miles of Spotsylvania and Orange County in central Virginia. Although the battle is generally considered a draw, the Confederate Army failed to halt the advance of Grant's army toward Spotyslvania and eventually Richmond.
