was the first in a series of bloody assaults led by
General Ulysses S. Grant and the Army of the Potomac
on General Robert E.Lee's Army of Northern Virginia
in what is referred to as the Overland Campaign. The
battle occurred in the impenetrable scrub growth and
rough terrain that encompassed more than 70 square miles
of Spotsylvania and Orange County in central Virginia.
Although the battle is generally considered a draw,
the Confederate Army failed to halt the advance of Grant's
army toward Spotyslvania and eventually Richmond.
