Virginia Beach,
now the largest city in Virginia, was incorporated in 1906;
though the general area had been settled for nearly 300 years.
Today, it is one of the most visited beaches on America's
east coast. It is located in the area of Virginia known as
Hampton Roads, at the southern end of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel,
the longest bridge-tunnel in the world.
Virginia Beach
is home to the Adam Thoroughgood House, a fully restored house
originally built in 1636. Adam Thoroughgood was an indentured
servant who gained his freedom and became a leading citizen
and politician in the region.
