Description/Range:
The Tufted Titmouse is a common year-round resident
throughout the eastern United States. The
five and a half inch titmouse is gray above
and white below. It has a conspicuous crest
and large black eyes. There is a hint of
orange visible from near the titmouse's wings.
Habitat/Song:
The Tufted Titmouse can be found
in any wooded habitat, as well as parks, gardens,
and neighborhoods with trees. Its loud ringing
song, "Peter....Peter....Peter....",
suggests a bird much larger.
Diet/Behavior:
Tufted Titmice are
among the most common winter feeder birds, and
much like the Black Capped Chickadee and White
Breasted Nuthatch, can be enticed to take seeds
from a person's hands. Tufted Titmice also eat
insects. They often form winter flocks with chickadees,
woodpeckers, nuthatches, and warblers. These birds
can sometimes be enticed to take seeds from hands. |
