of Richmond from the James River - wikipedia.org
Richmond, originally
called Henricus, was settled in 1611 by Sir Thomas Dale, the
governor of the Jamestown colony. It was here that the first
hospital in the colonies was built. In 1737, the city's name
was changed to Richmond, after the city of Richmond-upon-Thames,
England. In 1775, Patrick Henry uttered his famous words "Give
me liberty, or give me death" at St. John's Church in
Richmond. In 1780, the capital of Virginia was moved to Richmond
from Williamsburg. During the Civil War, Richmond was capital
of the Confederacy. It was ultimately captured in 1865 by
Union forces, just days before the Confederacy surrendered.
