Richmond
was declared the capital of the Confederacy in May of
1861. It was captured in 1865 after General Ulysses
S. Grant tore through Virginia at Spotyslvania, Wilderness,
Cold Harbor and eventually Petersburg. Grant's relentless
assaults against Lee's Army of Northern Virginia severly
weakened Confederate forces and rendered them ineffective
in Richmond's defense. Confederates burned the city
before its evacuation in 1865. After the burning of
Richmond, the Civil War was essentially over.
