Pittsburgh
was founded in 1754 by the French as Fort Duquesne. During
the French and Indian War, British forces occupied the
fort and renamed it Fort Pitt after British Secretary
of State William Pitt. In the late 1800's and early to
mid 1900's, the city of Pittsburgh was the world's most
prolific producer of steel. During World War II, the city
made 95 million tons of steel. Immigrants from throughout
the world flocked to Pittsburgh to work in its mills.
By the 1960's, however, the steel industry declined, and
Pittsburgh was left with high unemployment and dirty air.
Today, Pittsburgh
is a beautiful city with clean air and a new economy based
on banking, medicine, and robotics. Many major corporations
are headquartered in the area including Heinz, PNC Bank,
U.S. Steel, and GNC Health products. The city's skyline
was recently ranked the 16th most impressive in the world.
Pittsburgh is located at the confluence of the Monongahela
and Allegheny Rivers (which forms the Ohio River). It
is believed that Pittsburgh has more bridges than any
other place in the world. It was the boyhood home of Mr.
Nussbaum, who attended Shady Side Academy.
