The 10
month-long Siege of Petersburg was a crushing blow
to the Confederate
Army. Petersburg was a crucial supply line to Richmond
and served as a junction for five railroads. The Siege
at Petersburg was characterized by many bloody battles
including Deep Bottom, Peeble's Farm, and Boydton
Plank Road. After ten months, the loss of thousands
of lives, and the horrible conditions resulting from
the siege, Robert E. Lee issued orders to evacuate
Petersburg and Richmond. With the Confederate evacuation
of Petersburg, Union forces had effectively won the
war. |
