Description: The
Painted Bunting is one of the most colorful
birds found in America. In fact, they are
so colorful that they are sold as cage
birds in parts of Mexico. The five inch
Painted Bunting has a bright blue head
and conspicuous red eye ring. The breast
and stomach are red and the wings are yellow-green.
The Painted Bunting has purplish wings
and tail. Female Painted Buntings are the
only American bird to be entirely green.
Habitat/Range: Painted
Buntings are fairly common along the south
Atlantic Coast, the Gulf of Mexico, and
into parts of Texas. A few Painted Buntings
may be found inland to Arkansas, Oklahoma,
and Tennessee. While Painted Buntings are
very colorful, they made be hard to find
in their preferred habitat of forest undergrowth,
heavy shrubs, bushes, and low-lying vegetation.
Diet: Painted
Buntings eat insects and seeds and may
form substantial flocks at bird feeders
and bird baths. |
