Painted Bunting

Range Map - Song

Description: The Painted Bunting is one of the most colorful birds found in America. In fact, they are so colorful that they are sold as cage birds in parts of Mexico. The five inch Painted Bunting has a bright blue head and conspicuous red eye ring. The breast and stomach are red and the wings are yellow-green. The Painted Bunting has purplish wings and tail. Female Painted Buntings are the only American bird to be entirely green.

Habitat/Range: Painted Buntings are fairly common along the south Atlantic Coast, the Gulf of Mexico, and into parts of Texas. A few Painted Buntings may be found inland to Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Tennessee. While Painted Buntings are very colorful, they made be hard to find in their preferred habitat of forest undergrowth, heavy shrubs, bushes, and low-lying vegetation.

Diet: Painted Buntings eat insects and seeds and may form substantial flocks at bird feeders and bird baths.
