| Description:
The Great Black Backed Gull is North America's largest
gull. At 30 inches in length, it dwarfs the Ring
Billed and Herring Gulls it may associate with.
The Great Black Backed Gull has a wing span of nearly
five and a half feet!
The
Great Black Backed Gull looks much like a larger,
darker Herring Gull. It has a white head, breast,
and stomach, and charcoal back, wings and tail.
It also has a yellow bill and pale, pink feet.
Habitat/Range:
The Great Black Backed Gull is abundant in the North
Atlantic, particularly in coastal New England, and
has spread south to the coast of North Carolina.
It has also become established throughout the Great
Lakes regions.
Diet:
Great Black Backed Gulls are voracious eaters and
may form sizeable flocks at garbage dumps. They
also eat fish, eggs, and the young of other seabirds,
especially terns and puffins. |
