Fredericksburg,
situated at the falls of the Rappahannock River, played a
prominent role in the Civil War. Major battles occurred not
only at Fredericksburg, but at nearby Spotsylvania, Chancellorsville
and the area referred to as "Wilderness". It was
in the vicinity of Fredericksburg, where Ulysses S. Grant
and the Union army systematically demoralized the Confederate
Army in what came to be known as "the Overland Campaign".
In addition to its rich Civil War history, both George Washington
and Robert E. Lee were raised in the vicinity of Fredericksburg.
