Step
0.) Choose a character
and the course (putting green is one hole,
junior course is six holes, and pro course
is nine holes. Pro course includes multiplication,
whereas junior course includes large addition
and subtraction).
Step
1.) Find the math problem in the bottom
right portion of the screen. You have ten
seconds to ESTIMATE the answer. Put the answer
in the text box.
Step
2.) Click "validate" or hit
the enter button on your keyboard. If your
answer to the math problem is close (within
25 % of the actual answer), you will go on
to the next shot, where the math problem will
be easier. If your shot is not within 25 %
of the actual answer, or you do not get it
off in time, you must re-take the shot and
lose a stroke. If you get the answer exactly
right the first time, you get a hole in one.
If you get it exactly right in the second
or third shot, you sink the shot in the hole!
The game is scored just like real golf. The
goal is to get the LOWEST score possible.
Step
3.) Repeat the process for ensuing
math problems.
Rationale/Skills
for Estimation Valley Golf
Grade Level:
Third Grade and up Skills: Estimation, Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication Object: Complete the course using estimation skills
in as few strokes as possible.
Estimation Valley Golf was built with one thing in mind –
number sense. Students need to be able to make quick estimations
in life. By giving students ten seconds to come up with accurate
estimations of large problems, they are building number sense and
a sense of the value of numbers. In Estimation Valley Golf, students
are presented with a sequence of problems for estimation. Good estimations
(classified as those that are 25% smaller or larger than the real
answer) are rewarded with easier subsequent problems. As the student
successfully types accurate estimates, and get closer and closer
to the pin, they are presented with easier problems, and eventually
a very simple problem they can quickly answer, and hence, sink the
putt. The object of the game is to complete the course in as few
strokes as possible.
There are three levels to the game:
Putt – Practicing estimation (1 hole)
Junior – Addition and Subtraction (6 holes)
Pro – Addition, Subtraction, and Multiplication (9 holes)
Below is a sequence of problems a user can expect in the pro mode
(if estimations are accurate):
